I've searched far and wide trying to clarify the blurry details of Nicholas Longworth's contributions to the wine industry and Mt. Adams. Oh sure, every "commemorative" book has a blurb on this guy, and dedicates a sentence or two to the fact that he grew lots of grapes, but there are precious few DETAILS out there. Yesterday, after rumaging through the racks of two Cincinnati bookstores dedicated to "old" and "local" books, I finally stumbled into a biography Longworth that was published in 1933, aptly entitled "The Making of Nicholas Longworth." I'd hardly characterize this as the "definitive" or most "objective" book -- after all, his sister, who unwaveringly adored him, wrote the book -- but I did find some "new" information worth sharing. The book cover notes are a bit more aggressive. "Here is the first full length biography of one of the most engaging figures in American annals." Anyway, read on and I'll attempt to synthesize the new learning.
