Pete Keeps CGM Chain Alive: 5 Things You Don't Know About Me!

The viral blog chain finally hit me, and I was just tagged by Greg Sterling and Max Kalehoff.  Here are five things you may not know about me. 

• Policy Wonk! My first line of post-college experience was in the California Legislature, where I served as press secretary and legislative aid to then-Senator Art Torres, one of the state’s top Latino elected officials. I worked on legislation related to immigrant-education, school dropout prevention, advertising in classrooms, and economic development in the wake of the 1992 Los Angeles “Rodney King”riots.    

• Slug Sloganeer! While a student at UC Santa Cruz, I co-designed the now infamous logo for the iconoclastic school mascot, the Banana Slug.  This was my first real branding experience, and the ensuing business funded my first trip to Europe, and a decent chunk of my business school tuition.

• Avocado Boy!  At age 14, I was the youngest avocado grower in Southern California.  Our family had four gigantic avocado trees and every Tuesday I brought a trunkful of avocados to the local certified farmer market for sale.  That more than covered my allowance.

• Sicilian Blood: Despite the WASPY sound of my Blackshaw name, I’m loaded with Sicilian blood. My mother’s parents are both from a small town in Sicily near Palermo, Montemaggiore-Belsito. and my mother, mother of seven children, brings Sicilian intensity to everything she does, from cooking to over-achievement. I studied Italian in college!

• Ad Regulator? Despite my passion for new advertising models, I fought tooth and nail for three years with a coalition of school teachers and school board members to prevent Chris Whittle’s Channel One advertising model from entering California Classrooms.

I predict that it wont be long before the 'the view from where i blog' digital picture viral will soon cross the Atalantic. It's very hip idea. Think they are calling them memes over the pond :)
